Further, rental arrears in the country may be near $70 billion, CNBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for rental assistance, at least one member of a household must have experienced income loss, significant expenses due to the pandemic, or are eligible for unemployment benefits. They will need to show they are or could be at risk of homelessness. The person\u2019s current income level also can\u2019t be higher than 80% of the area\u2019s median income. Several states are prioritizing applicants who are at 50% or lower on the median income level and who\u2019ve been unemployed for 90 days or more, CNBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>Renters could be eligible for up to a total of 12 months of back rent and utility bills. They may also be eligible to get payments to cover future rental payments. The funds are paid directly to the landlord or utility company.<\/p>\n<p>Landlords may also be able to apply on behalf of their tenants, as long as they get approval from the tenant.<\/p>\n<p>Some states are already offering existing rental assistance programs under monies previously provided through the CARES Act. They may add the new funds to their existing rental assistance programs or start a new program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere or how will apply will vary city by city,\u201d Emily Benfer, a visiting law professor at Wake Forest University, told CNBC. \u201cRenters should contact local housing groups, their representatives, or the local 211\/311 lines to identify programs and learn how to apply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Am I eligible?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To qualify for the assistance, at least one member of your household has to have lost income or incurred significant expenses due to the pandemic, or be eligible for unemployment benefits.<\/p>\n<p>You will also need to demonstrate a risk of homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, your income level for 2020 can\u2019t exceed 80% of your area\u2019s median income, though states have been directed to prioritize applicants who fall at 50% or lower, as well as those who\u2019ve been out of work for 90 days or more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/136\/ERA-Frequently-Asked-Questions_Pub-1-19-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Expect to have to show in writing that you meet these requirements<\/a>, such as with a past due rent or utility notice.<\/p>\n<p>Data source | National Association of REALTORS\u00ae and CNBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 26, 2021 As part of last month\u2019s COVID-19 stimulus package, $25 billion in federal assistance funds are expected to be disbursed to states today, Jan. 26.
